Although a predecessor organization had been established in St. Louis nearly a century earlier, the Women Lawyers Association of Greater St. Louis (WLA) was formally created in 1976. The WLA is dedicated to helping female attorneys of the St. Louis metropolitan area deal with the biases that they faced in the legal profession at the time, and it continues to provide aid to female lawyers working within the legal community of the greater St. Louis region.

Lawyers frequently join the WLA to benefit from the numerous membership perks. The Women Lawyers Association of Greater St. Louis regularly hosts speaker events on topics that directly apply to the practice of law and are of interest to its membes, such as the judicial selection process and the alternatives to practicing in a law firm setting. Members of the WLA are able to stay abreast of any important legislative changes that would impact both their professional and social lives through newsletter updates provided by the Women Lawyers Association of Greater St. Louis’ legislative committee.

The Women Lawyers Association of Greater St. Louis also reaches out to future female lawyers in the region. Each year, the WLA grants a scholarship to a female law student attending either Southern Illinois University School of Law or a law school located in Missouri. Local female law students are given an opportunity to be mentored by members of the WLA through the organization’s mentorship program.
