Therefore, only licensed lawyers that are engaged in defending criminals in South Carolina are allowed to become members of SCACDL, and criminal prosecutors are expressly barred from joining. People that are not lawyers and judges that support the goals of the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers are permitted to join as associate members.

Criminal defense attorneys join SCACDL for many different reasons.
