Beginning in 1975, the Local Government Attorneys of Virginia (LGA) has worked to connect attorneys employed at municipal government entities within the State of Virginia. By bringing the municipal attorneys of the state together, the Local Government Attorneys of Virginia is able to better achieve its objectives of increasing the knowledge and skills of municipal attorneys in Virginia and allowing these attorneys to work together to better the overall practice of municipal law within Virginia. The LGA also allows for attorneys that work for the state and counties to join as associate members in order to further build up the municipal legal community.

The Local Government Attorneys of Virginia provides several benefits to its members. Members that wish to gain more knowledge on a particular legal subject related to their practice of municipal law have a number of opportunities to learn more through the LGA’s Information Exchange between members, the Handbook of Virginia Local Government Law that the Local Government Attorneys of Virginia updates annually, and the continuing legal education courses that the LGA sponsors throughout year. The Local Government Attorneys of Virginia also gives its members several opportunities to connect with one another, including membership in specific practice subgroups and two annual conferences held in the spring and fall.
