The Alabama Lawyers Association (ALA) recognizes that minorities have been historically underrepresented in the legal world. The Alabama Lawyers Association was formed with the idea of bringing that issue to the forefront of the legal profession. The ALA was previously known as the Alabama Black Lawyers Association and was formed in 1971.

The Alabama Lawyers Association was also created to provide support services to underrepresented communities while encouraging the continued study of law, civil rights, and its effectiveness. In order to uphold these goals, the ALA offers continuing legal education seminars for its members and several networking events where lively discussions of pertinent civil issues are encouraged.
