The Southwest Florida Chapter of the National Bar Association began with members of the legal field who fought for the right of African Americans to vote. The legacy of lawyers within the association continued into the 1940’s when the organization offered free legal clinics in areas where more than 5,000 residents were of African American descent. In the 1960’s the association held events to encourage the federal government in providing free legal aid to the indigent community.

Today, the association provides free legal assistance through the Black Elderly Legal Assistance Support Project. Through all of its efforts the organization has become a symbol for the Southwest Florida community in providing free or reduced fee services to the poor.
