The Illinois Institute for Local Government Law (ILGL) is a not-for-profit professional organization dedicated to assisting the needs of local practicing government lawyers. Founded in 1992, the bar association has held numerous workshops and conferences designed to improve the legal skills of its members. It seeks to provide education and a forum for open discussion geared toward elevating the level of representation given to local governments.

Because the Illinois Institute for Local Government Law is primarily concerned with raising the quality of government lawyering, most of the benefits received by the public are indirect in nature. But with more skilled attorneys working within the state government, the public can be more confident that their local government is being run properly.

Membership in the Illinois Institute for Local Government Law is open to any licensed Illinois attorney in good standing and actively representing local government. The ILGL is an accredited CLE provider. In addition to its wide array of skill workshops, the bar association also recognizes its most outstanding members each year through its annual award conference.
