The Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association (Mass LGBTQ Bar) was established in 1985 for lawyers in Massachusetts that identify themselves are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer. However, attorneys that identify themselves as straight may also join the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association as members, so long as they consider themselves to be allies of the LGBTQ community. The need for all members to be supportive of the LGBTQ community is essential to allowing the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association to further its primary goal of creating a unified presence for transgender, queer, gay, bisexual, and lesbian attorneys in the legal community.

Since helping the LGBTQ community in Massachusetts is important to the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association, community outreach is an essential component of the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association’s efforts. The Mass LGBTQ Bar regularly hosts events designed to promote community discussion of legal and societal issues that are currently faced by local members of the LGBTQ community, such as lectures and film screenings. Also, the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association supports programs and events that more directly impact the Massachusetts LGBTQ community, including career fairs for LGBTQ law students and the legal advice television show Legal Lines.
