The Bar Association of Montgomery County (BAMC) was founded in 1894 when the population of Montgomery County was only 1,100. From these humble beginnings Montgomery County has grown into a County with a population of 1,000,000 people and BAMC has grown with the community over the last century to become the dynamic bar association it is today.
BAMC's mission remains the same as it was over 100 years ago and the organization still seeks to improve the administration of justice, advance the delivery of quality legal representation, and ensure the integrity of the legal profession is upheld.
The Bar Association of Montgomery County hosts numerous networking and professional development events to encourage BAMC’s growth. A few of these events include CLE’s, mock trial events, golf outings, and tennis tournaments. One specialty program offered by the BAMC is the Summer Scholars Pipeline Program, an initiative designed to encourage diversity in Montgomery County. The Pipeline Program achieves their goal by seeking out diversity students in their second year of law school and helping them find employment with local law firms. Another method used by BAMC to encourage diversity in the legal profession is the Andrew L. Sonner Diversity Award Dinner, where the law firm showing the biggest commitment to increasing diversity in the area is recognized for their work.
Membership in the BAMC is restricted to attorneys licensed in Maryland , but attorneys licensed in other states may be granted admission if the executive committee finds them worthy of joining BAMC. A potential member must also fill out an application and pay an annual due, which ranges from $75.00 to $180.00.
