Formed in 1990, the D. Augustus Straker Bar Association is named after D. Augustus Straker, who was the first African-American to argue in front of the Michigan Supreme Court and the first elected African-American jurist in Michigan. The goal of the D. Augustus Straker Bar Association is to promote the role of minorities in the legal profession in Oakland County and to increase the career opportunities of minorities working in the legal field. The membership of the organization is reflective of the D. Augustus Straker Bar Association’s goals, and consists primarily of lawyers of ethnic minority descent and female lawyers.

The D. Augustus Straker Bar Association heavily promotes being active in the community. It has thirteen different committees that its members can join. A number of these committees exist to aid future minority attorneys now, such as the Bar Passage Program and the Martin Luther King Jr. Oral Advocacy Competition. Other committees help put on events that allow for members to network with one another and with other members of the legal community, including the Trailblazers Dinner and the Corporate Counsel Breakfast.
