Started by a group of Detroit patent attorneys, the Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association (MIPLA) was originally founded in 1913 as the Michigan Patent Law Association. Since its founding, the Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association has expanded beyond patents to include other areas of intellectual property, such as trademarks and trade secrets, hence the change of the organization’s name. Though the organization is a bar association in Michigan, non-lawyers including patent agents registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and out-of-state lawyers that neither resides nor practice in Michigan are permitted to join the organization as members.

The MIPLA is very active and hosts several events throughout the year. Some of the events are social and are designed to allow the association’s members to mingle and network with one another, including the annual Holiday Gathering and the Golf/Tennis Outing. Other events are organized for the purpose of educating the public about the intellectual property legal community in Michigan, such as the intellectual property career panels hosted at various law schools, or informing its members about the development of the practice of intellectual property law in Michigan, such as the luncheon speaker series.
