Named after the Stonewall Riots that happened in New York City in 1969, the Stonewall Bar Association (SBA) of Michigan is the predominant legal organization for lawyers practicing in Michigan that identify themselves as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. ‘The main focus of the Stonewall Bar Association is to promote the lesbian bisexual gay transgender (commonly referred to as LGBT) community in the legal profession, both in improving their status as attorneys and promoting sexual orientation legal equality. Though the organization is targeted at the bisexual, gay, transgender, and lesbian lawyers licensed to practice in Michigan, SBA membership is open to all lawyers that wish to support the LGBT community.

Since promotion of LGBT legal rights is central to the existence of the Stonewall Bar Association, the association goes to great lengths to bring attention to current LGBT legal rights issues. The most prevalent way that the organization does this is by posting links to news articles discussing the latest developments on LGBT on the front page of the association’s website. Another way that the Stonewall Bar Association makes the public aware of LGBT legal issues is by hosting and cosponsoring lectures about LGBT legal rights issues at schools and community centers.
