Established in 1874, the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL) was formed by some of the same attorneys that helped create the American Bar Association. The main purposes of the BAMSL are to further the professional development of its members, assist in the maintenance of high professional standards in the local legal community, and offer basic legal services to the general public. In order to achieve these goals, the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis permits not only lawyers, but also law students and judges to become members.
Attorneys frequently join BAMSL in order to take advantage of networking opportunities. The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis has several law practice sections that permit members to connect with other St. Louis lawyers interested in similar legal areas. Lawyers belonging to BAMSL frequently have opportunities to socialize with one another at various events hosted by the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis each year, including annual lunches and happy hours.
Members in need of continuing legal education credits are given a chance to obtain those credits by attending the many educational seminars that the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis hosts each month, including several free courses. BAMSL assists its members in obtaining employment by allowing them to apply to legal jobs that are posted through its legal placement services for free.
In addition to helping its members, the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis strives to benefit to the residents of St. Louis. Local residents that want to learn more about certain legal topics that are likely to impact them have a chance to do so by attending the People’s Law School that BAMSL operates in conjunction with the St. Louis Community College. The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis also provides local high school students a chance experience the legal profession through its Missouri High School Mock Trial Competition.
