Formed in 1951, the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys (MATA) was initially established as the Missouri Association of Claimants Attorneys. Reflective of both its original name and more modern name, MATA is predominantly concerned with maintaining the rights of individuals in the context of civil trials, informing the general public about areas of civil law that apply to them, assisting in the professional development of its members, and improving local residents’ ability to access the judicial system. The association is open to any attorney who is licensed to practice in Missouri, dedicated to furthering the goals of the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys, and devoted to representing individuals in civil trials.

Members of MATA enjoy the use of several tools designed to enhance their professional lives. The Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys has assembled several legal documents from its members—including trial briefs and various motions—in an online document bank for members to access. Attorneys belonging to MATA who require a convenient way to obtain continuing legal education credits can do so by watching online educational content that the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys makes available on its website.

The Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys strives to keep its members connected to one another. Lawyers belonging to the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys can reach out to other members in order to receive advice and aid from them through MATA’s listserv. The Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys keeps its members informed of the latest news in the practice of the civil litigation in Missouri by sending them a weekly newsletter and a monthly magazine.

The Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys is also committed to assisting the residents of the state. When natural disasters occur in Missouri, the MATA Emergency Response Team provides free legal aid to those that need help navigating the legal intricacies of dealing with insurance, FEMA, and a myriad of other complex areas. The Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys also provides help to the general public through its Missouri Trial Lawyers Care program, which provides material support to various charities located throughout the state.
