Formed in 1978, the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys (NCAWA) strives to support the female attorneys practicing law in North Carolina. The primary objectives of the NCAWA are to encourage women to be active in the state’s legal community, advance and protect women’s legal rights in North Carolina, and promote the development of North Carolina’s women lawyers. In addition to the main organization, the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys also has a number of regional chapters located throughout the state, including chapters in Durham, Charlotte, and the Piedmont Triad.

The NCAWA provides its members with numerous ways to get involved. Lawyers that are a part of the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys can help impact state legislation affecting women by participating in the Government Action Committee, which works with the NCAWA’s official lobbyist to promote a pro-women legislative agenda. Members of the NCAWA are also constantly raising money for important charities that help women in trouble, such as the Domestic Violence Women’s Shelter and the Free the Girls anti-human trafficking organization.

Aside from providing aid to the women of North Carolina in different ways, the NCAWA is also dedicated to being beneficial to its members. For members that are new to practicing law, the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys matches them with more experienced mentors to help them navigate their first years of practicing law. Lawyers belonging to the NCAWA have several opportunities to network with other members at the numerous social events that the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys and its chapters host throughout the year, such as the annual Spring Fling and monthly lunch meetings.
