The Ohio State Bar Association (OSBA) was founded in 1880 and has 26,000 attorney members and 31,000 total members. The OSBA is a voluntary organization whose mission is to promote the science of jurisprudence, take positions on matters of public interest, and ensure justice is administered fairly. The Ohio State Bar does not license attorneys; this is handled by the Supreme Court of Ohio.

The Ohio State Bar is very active and hosts a number of events for attorneys, law students, and the general public. A few of these events include hosting mock trial competitions, establishing essay contests, and hosting an annual convention. Other events put on by OSBA are CLE’s, seminars, and the Legal Eagle Program designed to explain the rights members of the public have. The OSBA also provides an attorney referral service and creates the green book, which is sent out to members to keep them informed of the latest Supreme Court of Ohio decisions.

The Ohio State Bar Association also has a charitable arm known as the Ohio State Bar Foundation (OSBF). OSBF works closely with the Ohio State Bar Association to develop grants, create legal brochures, and figure out ways to fund other charitable goals of the Ohio State Bar Association.

Membership in the OSBA is open to attorneys, law students, paralegals, and other legal professionals. To become a member of the Ohio State Bar you must submit a membership application and pay an annual due which ranges from $0 for law students to $305 for attorneys who have been licensed for more than 7 years.
