Established in 1979, the Carolina Patent Trademark Copyright Law Association (CPTCLA) was created by a group of four attorneys as a way to build a community among the intellectual property lawyers working in North Carolina and South Carolina. As the oldest intellectual property bar association in the Carolinas, the CPTCLA continues to be a leader in the intellectual property legal community in South Carolina and North Carolina. One of the ways that the Carolina Patent Trademark Copyright Law Association continues to support the intellectual property legal community as a whole is by funding the future of the intellectual property law through its scholarship program, which awards one scholarship to a University of North Carolina student that is pursing a degree in a hard science and one scholarship to a Clemson University student that is also obtaining a hard science degree.

There are several ways in which the CPTCLA furthers its members’ careers. Since the Carolina Patent Trademark Copyright Law Association serves lawyers in two states, it holds two conferences each year, one in North Carolina and one in South Carolina, so that members of the CPTCLA may attend a conference annually without having to travel to another state. At these annual conferences, attorneys that belong to the Carolina Patent Trademark Copyright Law Association frequently attend the many continuing legal education courses that are offered as part of the conferences in order to keep informed of the latest developments in intellectual property law.
