Formed in 1992, the Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys (VACDL) is a state-wide bar association for all attorneys that practice criminal defense law in Virginia. The Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys’ main purpose is to promote the equal and fair administration of justice. Since the Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys is dedicated to supporting the practice of criminal defense in the state, prosecutors are expressly barred from becoming members.

Attorneys that belong to the Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers enjoy several benefits. Services that the Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers provides for its members include a strike forces to review legal complaints brought against VACDL members, a mentorship program, and an amicus brief committee. Also, the Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers provides an annual opportunity for its members to obtain continuing legal education credits at its yearly meeting.
