At the forefront of free legal help or legal aid services for Vermonters is the Vermont Bar Foundation. This not-for-profit private organization is a leading source of private funding for a variety of programs which have been designed to provide low-income citizens of Vermont with increased access to law and justice.

The foundation is run primarily on funds raised from IOLTA (Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts) as well as bequests, donations, gifts or grants from a wide variety of sources. It is a stalwart member of the Access to Justice Coalition, along with pro bono legal services providers and other organizations. Together, these contribute virtually hundreds of hours at discounted, low or free rates in the best tradition of a service bar providing for the legal needs of many.

Vermont Bar Foundation has made a lot inroads in a several dimensions of concerns related to the law. First, of course, is the IOLTA process which has benefited so many organizations and individuals. Other foundation concerns include providing scholarships to financially challenged but deserving law students, the continuing legal education of communities in Vermont, and the upholding of not-for-profit efforts in the legal field.

The organization is the leading for privately-funded sources of legal aid to Vermonters who cannot afford to hire or retain lawyers.
